AUSTRALIA'S SPORTING SUCCESS: THE INSIDE STORY JOHN BLOOMFIELD 0868405825, UNSW PRESS - http://www.unswpress.com.au/Catalogue.htm July 2003, 280pp, PB , 235x155mm Price: $34.95 The extraordinary performances of Australian athletes, and an awareness of the system that fostered them, came to the world's attention during the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000. In this informative book, John Bloomfield traces the development of sport in Australia from the early 19th century through to the modern day institutions that drive Australia's highly successful sports system About the Author(s) John Bloomfield is currently Emeritus Professor at the School of Human Movement and Exercise Science, University of Western Australia. Detailed Description Over the last few years Australian men and women have been acclaimed as world champions in sports as diverse as archery, athletics, boxing, cricket, cycling, equestrianism, field hockey, golf, netball, rowing, rugby (both union and league), shooting, squash, swimming, surfing, tennis and water polo. The success of Australian athletes probably only became obvious during the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000, when Australia was placed fourth in the overall medal count and then first in the subsequent Paralympics. Following these triumphs, Australians won 39 team and individual world championships in 2001, many of them in non-Olympic sports. The above performances give rise to an obvious question: how has a relatively small country achieved so much? If anyone is perfectly placed to answer the question it is the author of *Australia's Sporting Success*, John Bloomfield. As a former Chairman of the Australian Institute of Sport, and Co-chairman of the Australian Sports Commission, he has been one of the major architects of the Australian sports system. He has also been a national champion sportsman, an elite-level coach, a noted author, a professor of sports science, President of Sports Medicine Australia and Chairman of the Australian Sports Science Council. His is truly the 'inside story' of Australia's sporting success. *Australia's Sporting Success* traces the development of Australian sport from the early 19th century, and the rivalry between the white native-born Australians ('the Currency lads'), many of convict stock, and the new settlers. This rivalry enabled qualities such as nationalism, social cohesion and tenacity to develop as distinctive traits of the Australian character. However, the book's primary focus is on the modern era and this nation's clever investment in science, management, coaching, junior sport, and talent identification and development, have produced the outstanding results that we see today. The Australian sports system has become a blueprint for success that is now being copied in many countries around the world. Written in an accessible style, this book features 30 profiles of prominent Australian sporting identities including Cathy Freeman, Louise Sauvage, George Gregan, Ian Thorpe and Steve Waugh, and 60 high-quality photos. This title provides the definitive explanation of a remarkable national achievement. Bebemoremos! Continua!) Ate=B4 la=B4 Fernanda, Joaozinho Freire e Laercio Yahoo!
