Lightweight faces ban for marijuana

WEST AUSTRALIAN boxer Anthony Little will be fighting for his sporting
career when he travels to Melbourne to face the Court of Arbitration in
Sport on Wednesday after testing positive to marijuana.

If found guilty, the 24-year-old could be banned from the sport for up to
two years, costing him his place in the Australian team to contest the
Commonwealth Games.

Little, 24, tested positive to marijuana after winning the lightweight gold
medal at the Australian selection trials in Melbourne in August.

He will strongly defend the charge, stating the positive reading was a
result of passive smoking while a passenger in a car.

Little's Perth-based trainer Geoff Peterson, Australia's assistant boxing
trainer at the 2004 Athens Olympics, attributed the positive test to
Little's home environment.

"Anthony plays football for one of the Geraldton (450 kilometres north of
Perth) teams," Peterson said yesterday. "During the season, he regularly
travels to Mullewa for matches. That means 70 minutes' travel each way in a
car with several other people. Some of them smoke marijuana, though Anthony

Peterson hopes that, if found guilty, Little will receive no more than a
caution. "It is unjust and unfair," Peterson said. "Anyway, marijuana is not
a performance-enhancing drug."

Boxing Australia has had marijuana on the prohibitive list for only a year.

Australian coach Bodo Andreass has declined to discuss Little's situation,
except to confirm that due to the positive test, Little had been replaced in
the Australian team for last year's world championships.
