USA - Five Olympians in preliminary USA squad

NEW YORK (FIBA World Championship) - The 22 players in Team USA's preliminary squad for the FIBA World Championship have been reported by ESPN.com and both Kobe Bryant and LeBron James are included.

USA Basketball are supposed to announce a 25-man group on Sunday and have yet to confirm the website's report.

The group will be whittled down to 15 and eventually 12 for this year's big event in Japan.

ESPN says it has gathered the names from NBA sources.

Five bronze-medal winning Olympians from Athens - Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade, Phoenix Suns duo Amare Stoudemire and Shawn Marion, Denver Nuggets forward Carmelo Anthony and Cleveland Cavaliers forward James - are among those reportedly in.

Allen Iverson, the point guard and co-captain on that 2004 Olympic team, wanted to make the three-year commitment required by USA Basketball but looks to have been left out.

Chris Webber, Iverson`s Philadelphia 76ers team-mate, is not included either.

"I wanted to play," Webber said to the Detroit Free Press on Wednesday.

Brad Miller, a member of the Americans' bronze-medal winning side at the FIBA World Championship in Athens in 1998, is in the group.

The Detroit Pistons' All-Star and NBA-title winning guard Chauncey Billups is also among the names.

Team USA, which will be led by Duke University coach Mike Kryzewski, has two of his former Blue Devil players in Shane Battier (Memphis Grizzlies) and Elton Brand (LA Clippers).

The favourite to win NBA Rookie of the Year, New Orleans guard Chris Paul, is in the group.

The list also has a pair of Washington Wizards in power forward Antawn Jamison and Gilbert Arenas.

The reigning NBA champions San Antonio Spurs have one player involved in Bruce Bowen.

Adam Morrison of Gonzaga, JJ Redick of Duke and Indianapolis high school star Greg Oden are widely expected to be included in the preliminary group.

There is no dominating center in this group. Seven-footer Miller of the Sacramento Kings has been named, however.

The group also has 6ft 10in players Chris Bosh (Toronto) and Stoudemire, who are listed as power forwards/centers.

Jerry Colangelo, the managing director for Team USA, has left a place open for Shaquille O`Neal, the Miami Heat seven-footer.

Unconfirmed Team USA squad named by ESPN.Com: Carmelo Anthony (Denver Nuggets), Gilbert Arenas (Washington Wizards), Shane Battier (Memphis Grizzlies), Chauncey Billups (Detroit Pistons), Chris Bosh (Toronto Raptors), Bruce Bowen (San Antonio Spurs), Elton Brand (LA Clippers), Kobe Bryant (LA Lakers), Dwight Howard (Orlando Magic), Josh Howard (Dallas Mavericks), LeBron James (Cleveland Cavaliers), Antawn Jamison (Washington Wizards), Joe Johnson (Atlanta Hawks), Rashard Lewis (Seattle SuperSonics), Shawn Marion (Phoenix Suns), Brad Miller (Sacramento Kings), Chris Paul (New Orleans Hornets), Paul Pierce (Boston Celtics), Michael Redd (Milwaukee Bucks), Luke Ridnour (Seattle SuperSonics), Amare Stoudemire (Phoenix Suns), Dwyane Wade (Miami Heat).
